Bone-in ham costs less per plate, here's how much ham per person
Plan on 3/4 pound of bone-in ham or 1/2 pound of boneless per guest. Here's how much ham per person for 6 to 20 people, what each style costs per plate at USDA-tracked prices, and spiral ham cooking times by weight.

Plan on about three quarters of a pound of bone-in ham for every guest, or half a pound if the ham is boneless. That's the practical answer to how much ham per person, and it leaves enough for sandwiches the next day. The bigger surprise is the price: at USDA-tracked store prices, bone-in ham usually costs less per plate, even after you pay for the bone.
The USDA's own serving guide is leaner, at 1/3 to 1/2 pound of bone-in ham per guest and 1/4 to 1/3 pound of boneless. Those figures assume a table crowded with sides. Girls Can Grill's ham sizing guide rounds up to 1/2 pound boneless and 3/4 pound bone-in, because leftovers are half the reason people buy a ham at all.
How much ham per person, in pounds and grams
The weight on the label includes the bone, the glaze packet and any juices in the bag. That's why every chart asks for more bone-in ham than boneless, usually a third to a half more. Here's how the common guidelines compare, with grams for anyone cooking from a metric scale.
| Ham style | Per person | In grams |
|---|---|---|
| Bone-in, USDA guide | 1/3 to 1/2 lb | 151 to 227 g |
| Boneless, USDA guide | 1/4 to 1/3 lb | 113 to 151 g |
| Bone-in, with leftovers | 3/4 lb | 340 g |
| Boneless, with leftovers | 1/2 lb | 227 g |
| Bone-in, Omni Calculator | 0.65 lb | 295 g |
| Boneless, Omni Calculator | 0.45 lb | 204 g |

How many pounds of ham per person when there's a second main?
If a turkey or roast shares the table, drop to the low end of the USDA range. That's about 1/3 pound of bone-in ham per guest, or 151 grams. Small children rarely finish an adult portion, so plenty of hosts count two kids as one adult.
Rule of thumb: 3/4 pound of bone-in or 1/2 pound of boneless ham per guest covers dinner plus a modest round of leftovers.
How much ham per guest for 6 to 20 people
Multiply your head count by the per-person weight, then round up to the nearest ham the store actually sells. The USDA cooking chart lists spiral hams in the 7 to 9 pound range, so one spiral ham handles most gatherings of 10 to 12. Bigger crowds need a whole ham or two smaller ones.
| Guests | Bone-in | Boneless |
|---|---|---|
| 6 | 4.5 lb | 3 lb |
| 8 | 6 lb | 4 lb |
| 10 | 7.5 lb | 5 lb |
| 12 | 9 lb | 6 lb |
| 16 | 12 lb | 8 lb |
| 20 | 15 lb | 10 lb |
Reading a ham label in kilograms
Imported hams and some deli counters label in kilograms. One pound is 453.6 grams, so a 9 pound ham is about 4.08 kilograms. Our pounds to grams chart covers every size in between.
Why bone-in ham per person is the cheaper buy
The USDA weekly retail pork report for the week before Easter 2025 tracked feature prices at more than 27,000 stores. A conventional bone-in spiral-sliced half ham averaged $2.23 a pound. A boneless half ham averaged $4.86, more than twice as much.
Run that through the serving math and bone-in wins easily. At 3/4 pound a guest, spiral ham works out to about $1.67 per person. Boneless half ham at 1/2 pound a guest comes to about $2.43, and you're taking home less meat. Holiday sale prices move around, but the gap is wide enough to survive most of them.

What a ready-made ham dinner costs instead
That same report found about 10% of stores selling a cooked ham dinner for 4 to 6 people, at a weighted average of $63.65. A 4.5 pound spiral ham for six would cost roughly $10 at the average price. Most of that kit money is buying sides and an evening off.
Twelve guests need about 9 pounds of spiral ham, roughly $20 at $2.23 a pound. The same crowd on boneless half ham needs 6 pounds and close to $29.
Spiral ham cooking time at 325°F
Spiral hams are sold fully cooked, so you're really just reheating. The USDA chart, reproduced in Inch Calculator's ham cooking guide, puts spiral ham cooking time at 10 to 18 minutes per pound at 325°F, until the center reads 140°F.
How long to cook a spiral ham in oven, by weight
So how long to cook a 9 lb ham that's spiral sliced? Somewhere between 90 minutes and 2 hours 42 minutes. The range is wide because ovens, starting temperatures and pan setups differ, which is why the thermometer gets the final say.

How long to cook a ham per pound when it isn't spiral
Whole bone-in hams, half hams and anything labeled cook before eating run on different clocks. All of these figures assume a 325°F oven, the same as the spiral numbers above.
How long to cook an 11 pound ham
A fully cooked 11 pound whole bone-in ham at 15 to 18 minutes per pound needs 165 to 198 minutes, or about 2 hours 45 minutes to 3 hours 18 minutes. If the label says cook before eating, use 18 to 20 minutes per pound instead, which comes to 198 to 220 minutes and a target of 145°F.
Times are only estimates. A thermometer in the thickest part, away from the bone, is the real finish line: 140°F for fully cooked ham, 145°F for raw.
Weigh the ham before you set the timer
Every number above starts with weight, and leftover halves, farm hams and trimmed pieces often lose their label. A 6 pound remainder of a 9 pound ham needs only about two thirds of the original time. If your scale reads in grams, the grams to ounces converter gets you back to ounces, and 16 of those make a pound.

Ham questions people ask before the holidays
How much ham per person for a buffet?
Buffets with several proteins sit near the USDA low end, around 1/3 pound bone-in or 1/4 pound boneless per guest. That's 151 grams or 113 grams. Add a pound or two to the total if you want leftovers.
How long to cook 10 lb ham that's spiral sliced?
At 10 to 18 minutes per pound, a 10 pound spiral ham needs 100 to 180 minutes at 325°F. Start checking around the 100 minute mark and stop once the center hits 140°F.
Does a smaller ham need more minutes per pound?
Yes, per the chart. A fully cooked whole bone-in ham gets 15 to 18 minutes per pound, while a half ham gets 18 to 24. Total time is still shorter for the half, since there's less of it.
Is 3/4 pound of ham per person too much?
Only if you dislike leftovers. It's more than double the USDA's low-end bone-in figure, and the extra turns into sandwiches, omelets and fried rice for the rest of the week.
