Head to head

Scale for Grams vs Working Scale: Photo AI vs Phone Sensors

These two apps solve "weigh it with your phone" in opposite ways: Scale for Grams estimates weight from a photo using computer vision, while Working Scale physically balances the object on your phone and reads the accelerometer. Which fits you depends on your platform, the object's size, and how much setup you'll tolerate.

Last updated July 6, 2026 · Scale for Grams is our app. Working Scale was removed from Google Play around November 2022; details are from its archived listing and the Uptodown APK mirror.

Choose Scale for Grams if…

  • · You're on iPhone or just want to use a browser
  • · The object is bigger than ~100 g (parcels, produce, pets' toys…)
  • · You want an answer in seconds with zero setup
  • · You also want calories, dimensions, counts or coin ID

Choose Working Scale if…

  • · You're on Android and don't mind sideloading an APK
  • · The item is small and light (letters, coins, powders in the 5–100 g band)
  • · You want a sensor reading rather than an AI estimate

Frequently asked questions

Which is more accurate, Scale for Grams or Working Scale?

Neither replaces a real scale. Working Scale takes a physical sensor reading, but its accuracy depends heavily on the balancing setup and works only for small items (roughly 5–100 g per its listing). Scale for Grams produces an AI estimate typically within 10–20% for common objects of any size. For certified precision, use a hardware scale.

Does Working Scale work on iPhone?

No — Working Scale is an Android-only app built around the accelerometer workflow, and since its removal from Google Play in 2022 it must be sideloaded as an APK even on Android. On iPhone, Scale for Grams (photo-based) works on iOS and in any browser at scaleforgrams.com.

Can any app weigh something using the phone screen?

Not on modern phones. Screens no longer include pressure-sensing hardware (Apple removed 3D Touch), so apps claiming to weigh objects placed on the screen are simulations. Real approaches are sensor balancing (Working Scale) or camera-based estimation (Scale for Grams).
